In August of 2023, I was able to attend the Prestigous Queens Summer Vocal Institute (QSVI). Under the Guidance of Artistic Director Dr. Sherry Overholt, QSVI in 2023 featured an Artist Showcase, Menotti's The Old Maid and The Thief, Mozart's Die Zauberflöte, an Opera Scenes Concert, a Final Gala.
As a member in the College/Pre-Professional Division at QSVI, I was invited to perform in the Artist Showcase. This concert was meant to feature the artists to friends, family, and Industry Professionals such as Directors and Managers.
My performance featured ”Sibella” from Lutvak and Freedman’s A Gentleman’s Guide to Love and Murder. Chosen from my repertoire by the program organizers, this piece accentuated my skills in being able to have a balance in both Classical Music and Musical Theater.
When accepted to QSVI, I was given the opporunity to sing my first full role as Bob in Menotti's The Old Maid and The Thief. Under the Direction of Jana Ballard and Music Direction of Jamin Kim, I navigated this role carefully as I wanted to give as much attention to detail. I knew developing this character would be different than what I'd have done before. I came prepared to throw things at the wall to see if they would stick. I treasured every minute and grew to love the show and my castmates.
Originally assigned as a cover, I learned all my music. Memorizing some numbers hoping to get rehearsal time as Papageno, when not rehearsing Bob. However, after seeing what I knew, Director Alex Sheerin asked if I could memorize the rest of the show in a week; I said yes and I did. I proceeded to have a chaotic amount of fun creating my Papageno. An incredible learning experience, I will hold my first Papageno with me forever, even if it doesn't showcase the best of my vocal abilities.
